A public health issue often underestimated

Parents devote a lot of attention to the products they choose for their baby, to the materials, certifications, and composition. However, an equally important exposure factor is often overlooked: the quality of the air inside the home. According to the French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health & Safety (ANSES), French people spend, on average, more than 80% of their time indoors. For infants and young children, this proportion is even higher.

Indoor air pollution refers to the presence of chemical, biological, or particulate substances in the air of homes, at concentrations likely to affect health. According to ANSES, it is one of the main environmental factors of health risk in France. This finding is all the more worrying for young children, whose respiratory tracts and neurological systems are still developing.

Why are infants particularly vulnerable?

Several biological factors make babies and young children more susceptible than adults to indoor pollution.

A higher breathing rate

Infants breathe faster than adults: their respiratory rate is approximately two to three times higher. They therefore inhale proportionally more air, and with it, more potential pollutants, per unit of body weight.

Significant time spent on the floor

From a few months old, babies explore their environment by crawling, sitting, and putting objects in their mouths. However, concentrations of certain pollutants, particularly volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and fine particles, can be higher near the floor than at adult height. Household dust, which can contain flame retardants, phthalates, or other worrying substances, also accumulates there.

Immature biological systems

An infant's brain, lungs, and immune system are still developing. Exposure to certain pollutants during this period, known as the 'window of vulnerability,' can have long-term effects on development, according to studies cited by ANSES in its reports on early exposure to chemical substances. However, it is important to distinguish between clearly documented effects and hypotheses still under investigation in scientific literature.

Main identified sources of indoor pollution

ANSES and the Scientific and Technical Centre for Building (CSTB) have helped to document the main sources of pollutants in French homes. Several categories are generally distinguished.

Building and decoration materials

Paints, varnishes, glues, and floor coverings can emit volatile organic compounds (VOCs), some of which are classified as carcinogenic or reprotoxic. These emissions are higher in the first few weeks or months after installation, which explains why renovating a child's room just before birth can pose a risk if the home is not sufficiently ventilated.

Household and hygiene products

Common cleaning products, some air fresheners, scented candles, or even sprays can release VOCs and fine particles into the ambient air. The use of these products in rooms where a baby is present requires particular attention.

Furniture and textiles

Some furniture made of agglomerated particleboard can emit formaldehyde, a substance whose health impact is documented. Textiles, cushions, or synthetic carpets can also retain allergens or chemical substances from their manufacturing. This is one of the reasons why the materials used in childcare products are subject to increasing attention from manufacturers and regulatory bodies. Combustion and heating

Wood-burning heaters, candles, incense, or even gas stoves can produce fine particles and carbon monoxide. The presence of these sources in a poorly ventilated home significantly increases indoor pollution levels.

What health authorities recommend

Given these observations, several French and European organizations have issued practical recommendations for families. ANSES notably recommends airing homes for at least ten minutes a day, even in winter, preferring cleaning products with low VOC content, and avoiding renovation work in the weeks preceding the arrival of an infant, or failing that, allowing the home to air out for a long time before the baby moves in.

HAS and Santé Publique France also emphasize the importance of never smoking inside a home in the presence of a child, and of regularly checking the proper functioning of controlled mechanical ventilation (CMV) systems in homes that are equipped with them.

These recommendations are part of a broader approach to early environmental prevention, which is also found in WHO work on children's environmental health. The World Health Organization has published indoor air quality guidelines, available on the official WHO website, which confirm that indoor pollutants are among the priority environmental risks for child health.

Consumption choices that matter

Beyond daily actions, indoor air quality is also influenced by the products introduced into the home. Furniture, bedding, childcare products: the chosen materials contribute to the chemical composition of the baby's immediate environment.

This reality converges with an observable trend among French parents: increasing attention paid to environmental and health certifications of children's products. Oeko-Tex, GOTS certifications for textiles, or A+ emission class labels for furniture, are all useful benchmarks for limiting sources of chemical emissions inside the home.

Limitations of current knowledge

It is important to note that while the effects of certain indoor pollutants are clearly documented, other questions remain open in scientific literature. The effects of combined low-dose exposures, thresholds below which exposure becomes risk-free, or very long-term effects on neurological development are subjects of ongoing research. Precaution therefore remains the guiding principle recommended by health authorities, pending more complete data.
