For several years, the question of very young children's exposure to screens has mobilized an increasing number of researchers in neuroscience, pediatrics, and developmental psychology. It is no longer a societal debate confined to the columns of parenting magazines: institutions such as the WHO, the French Society of Pediatrics, and research teams regularly publish data that provide clearer insights, even if the picture remains nuanced.

It is important, before going further, to distinguish what falls under established scientific consensus, what is still under investigation, and what currently remains in the realm of hypotheses.

What the WHO officially recommends

In 2019, the World Health Organization published clear recommendations on physical activity, sedentary behavior, and sleep for children under 5 years of age. On the issue of screens, the WHO's position is unambiguous for children under 2 years old: no screen exposure is recommended, with the exception of interactive video calls with close relatives.

Between 2 and 4 years old, the WHO recommends limiting sedentary screen time—i.e., passively watching content—to a maximum of one hour per day, and favoring quality content accompanied by an adult. These recommendations are based on the precautionary principle, but also on a body of data concerning the potential effects on language development, sleep, and attentional capacities.

What recent scientific studies reveal

Language development

Several studies published in specialized journals such as JAMA Pediatrics or Pediatrics have examined the link between early screen exposure and language acquisition. The most robust results indicate that prolonged and unaccompanied exposure—especially to non-interactive content—is associated with delays in vocabulary development in children aged 12 to 30 months. These are statistical associations, not definitively proven causalities, which is an important distinction.

What researchers consistently emphasize is the irreplaceable value of direct verbal exchanges between an adult and a child. The screen, even an interactive one, does not reproduce the conversational turn-taking mechanisms that stimulate language acquisition.

Sleep quality

Data published by chronobiology research teams show that screen exposure in the hour preceding bedtime disrupts melatonin secretion, even in very young children. The blue light emitted by screens delays falling asleep and can reduce the duration of deep sleep phases. In infants and toddlers, sleep plays a central role in memory consolidation and brain maturation—which makes this factor particularly significant in the early years.

Attentional capacities

Research published in JAMA Pediatrics in 2019, among other places, highlighted an association between early screen exposure and attentional difficulties observed around age 5. Here again, researchers are cautious: it is difficult to disentangle the contribution of screen exposure from that of other environmental or family factors. These results are taken seriously by the scientific community, but they should be read as warning signs requiring further investigation, not as absolute truths.

The French Society of Pediatrics and the French position

In France, the French Society of Pediatrics has aligned itself with WHO recommendations while producing its own guides for parents and healthcare professionals. It particularly emphasizes the notion of context of use: what matters is not only screen time itself, but how it fits into the child's day, the nature of the content, and especially the presence or absence of a caring adult to accompany and give meaning to what is seen.

What this practically changes for parents

Before 2 years: increased vigilance

Recommendations converge towards a very strict limitation of screen exposure before 2 years of age. This does not mean that a baby who sees a screen on in the background will suffer irreversible harm. It means that an infant's developing brain benefits much more from direct sensory interactions—touch, voice, gaze, movement—than from audiovisual content, no matter how educational it is presented.

It is precisely in this logic that awakening environments designed to stimulate the senses in a concrete and progressive way become fully meaningful. For children between 2 and 3 years old, the question is no longer simply about time but about the quality of the experience. A cartoon watched in silence on a tablet placed in front of a child alone does not have the same developmental value as content viewed with a parent who comments, asks questions, and makes connections with the child's daily life. The adult's role as a mediator remains central.

What still needs to be explored

It would be inaccurate to present current knowledge as definitive. Several gray areas persist: the long-term effects of moderate and accompanied exposure are still insufficiently documented; longitudinal studies on large cohorts are lacking for certain aspects; and technologies evolve faster than research, which means that data collected on uses from ten years ago do not necessarily apply to today's touch screens.

What science can affirm with a reasonable level of confidence is that the first years of life are a window of particular sensitivity for neurological development, and that direct human interactions constitute the most fertile ground for this development. The rest still belongs to the realm of ongoing research.
