Endocrine disruptors (EDCs) have been among the priorities of European and French health agencies for several years. For parents of young children, the question is particularly concrete: can childcare products, toys, textiles, and everyday items expose infants to these substances? ANSES (French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health & Safety) has published several works on this subject, the conclusions and limitations of which it is useful to understand.

What is an endocrine disruptor?

An endocrine disruptor is a chemical substance that interferes with the functioning of an organism's hormonal system. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines EDCs as exogenous substances that alter endocrine system functions and thus cause adverse health effects in an intact organism, its offspring, or sub-populations. This definition, although still subject to scientific debate on exposure thresholds, is now widely accepted by the international community.

The chemical families most documented in the context of childcare include phthalates (used as plasticizers), bisphenol A and its substitutes, parabens (preservatives), certain brominated flame retardants, and perfluorinated compounds (PFAS). Each of these families is subject to specific regulations, with varying degrees of progress in Europe.

What ANSES's work indicates

ANSES has conducted risk assessments on several of these substances in the context of infant and young child exposure. Its reports highlight several important points.

Increased physiological vulnerability in young children

Infants and young children exhibit particular sensitivity to endocrine disruptors. Their hormonal system is still developing, their metabolic pathways are not yet mature, and their behavior—putting objects in their mouths, spending time on the floor—increases exposure routes. ANSES emphasizes that early developmental windows constitute specific periods of vulnerability, distinct from those of adults.

Banned substances, but questions persist

Bisphenol A (BPA) has been banned in food containers intended for infants and young children in the European Union since 2011, and its use has been extended to other applications. Certain phthalates are also banned in toys and childcare articles under the REACH regulation. These regulatory advances are real. However, ANSES has also highlighted in its work that substitute substances for BPA (notably bisphenol S, bisphenol F) present worrying toxicological profiles and are still insufficiently studied. This is an ongoing scientific debate, not an established consensus.

The cocktail effect: an unresolved issue

One of the central issues identified by ANSES is what researchers call the cocktail effect, i.e., the potential interaction between several substances simultaneously present at low doses. Regulatory assessments generally focus on each substance in isolation, which does not necessarily reflect actual exposure conditions. European research, particularly within the EDC-MixRisk program, has explored this question, but knowledge remains incomplete.

European regulations: where do we stand?

The European Union has several regulatory frameworks that apply to baby products: the REACH regulation for chemical substances, the Toy Directive (2009/48/EC), the regulation on food contact materials, and specific regulations for certain product categories. The European Commission also adopted a strategy on endocrine disruptors in 2018, strengthened within the framework of the European Green Deal and the Chemicals for Sustainability Strategy.

In practice, this translates into regularly updated lists of restricted or prohibited substances. Parents can consult the ECHA (European Chemicals Agency) database to access substances subject to authorization or restriction under REACH. However, it should be noted that regulations evolve out of step with scientific research, which leaves persistent areas of uncertainty.

What concrete practices can reduce exposure?

Given this situation, the recommendations of health agencies converge on a few precautionary principles applicable in daily life. These recommendations are not intended to generate anxiety but to help parents identify genuinely available levers for action.

Prioritize documented materials

For items in prolonged contact with the baby—playmats, bath accessories, feeding equipment—choosing products whose material composition is clearly indicated and whose certifications are verifiable represents a first concrete step. Oeko-Tex Standard 100, GOTS for textiles, or CE compliances accompanied by tests in accredited laboratories provide a higher level of guarantee than a simple marketing mention. Regularly ventilate the baby's living spaces

Pay attention to infant cosmetics

Care products applied to the baby's skin represent a skin exposure route that should not be overlooked. European cosmetic regulations (Regulation 1223/2009) prohibit certain parabens in products intended for children under 3 years old, but other controversial substances remain authorized. Reading the ingredient list (INCI) and preferring short and documented formulations is advisable.

What this question reveals about our consumption choices

The issue of endocrine disruptors in baby products is part of a broader reflection on how we design objects for young children. It questions the proliferation of products, often quickly manufactured, with poorly documented materials, in a context of strong commercial pressure on parents.

A less quantitative approach—choosing fewer products, but better sourced, more durable, with transparent composition—is consistent with what available scientific data allows us to conclude. This is not absolute certainty, but a reasonable direction in a context of partial uncertainty.
