Why indoor air particularly concerns infants

Pollution is often associated with the outdoor environment: traffic, industries, fine particles in urban areas. However, according to the French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health & Safety (ANSES), indoor air quality represents a major public health issue, all the more concerning as infants and young children are exposed to it for prolonged periods and under physiological conditions that make them particularly vulnerable.

A baby spends most of its first weeks indoors. Its respiratory rate is higher than that of an adult, which means it proportionally inhales more air—and therefore more potential pollutants—relative to its body weight. Its respiratory tract and its neurological and immune systems are still developing, which amplifies sensitivity to chemical compounds present in the home environment.

Which indoor pollutants are identified as concerning

ANSES and the Scientific and Technical Centre for Building (CSTB) have conducted several programs to assess indoor air quality in French homes. These studies identify several families of substances whose presence in living spaces is documented.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs)

VOCs include a set of chemical substances that evaporate at room temperature. They are emitted by many common materials: paints, varnishes, glues, floor coverings, agglomerated wood panel furniture, household cleaning products. Among the most frequently detected VOCs in homes are formaldehyde, benzene, and toluene. Formaldehyde is classified as a proven human carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). Its presence in living spaces, even at low concentrations, warrants particular vigilance when infants reside there.

Fine and ultrafine particles

The sources of fine particles inside a home are numerous: burning candles or incense, cooking food, smoking, printers, and even certain heating appliances. Ultrafine particles, with a diameter less than 0.1 micrometer, penetrate deeply into the respiratory tract and can reach the bloodstream. Their impact on infant lung development is receiving increasing attention in scientific literature.

Phthalates and other plasticizers

Some plasticizers used in flexible materials—PVC floor coverings, shower curtains, certain old toys—can be found in household dust and be ingested or inhaled by infants who spend time on the floor. ANSES has published several opinions on phthalates, highlighting their potential endocrine-disrupting activity. What studies say about long-term effects

It is important to distinguish what is established scientific consensus from what remains an active area of research. On several points, the data are sufficiently convergent that public health agencies have adopted formal recommendations.

Early exposure to tobacco smoke, including during the prenatal period, is associated with an increased risk of sudden infant death syndrome, recurrent respiratory infections, and the development of asthma. This link is considered established by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the French National Authority for Health (HAS). This is not a hypothesis but a documented fact on which medical recommendations are based.

For other pollutants, such as VOCs at low chronic concentrations, epidemiological studies suggest associations with neurocognitive developmental disorders, but direct causality is more difficult to establish due to the multiplicity of exposure factors. Researchers agree that the precautionary principle is necessary here, especially for infants whose central nervous system is in full maturation.

Practical recommendations from health authorities

The French National Authority for Health and ANSES formulate several recommendations accessible to all households. These tips do not require significant investment and can be implemented gradually.

Ventilate regularly and effectively

Daily ventilation of rooms, even in winter, remains one of the most effective levers for renewing indoor air and reducing pollutant concentration. ANSES recommends ventilating each room for at least ten minutes a day, by opening windows wide rather than ajar. It is preferable to ventilate at times when outdoor pollution is lower, avoiding peak traffic hours in urban environments.

Choose low-emission products

For materials used in baby's living spaces—paints, floor coverings, furniture—VOC emission classification labels allow products to be compared. In France, this label has been mandatory since 2012 for construction and decoration products. Class A+ corresponds to the lowest emission levels.

Limit certain indoor combustion sources

Scented candles, incense, unrenovated wood fireplaces: these sources of particles and VOCs should be avoided or very strictly limited in rooms where an infant stays. Smoking, including on a balcony with the door left open, exposes the child to chemical residues that persist in the air and on surfaces.

Maintain bedding and textile surfaces

Household dust is a vector for pollutant accumulation, particularly phthalates and flame retardants. Regular vacuuming with a HEPA filter, combined with frequent washing of sheets and textiles near the baby, helps reduce this exposure. It is also in this logic that the choice of certified materials for products in direct contact with the child makes perfect sense: a baby play mat whose composition is transparent and certified limits uncertainties about the substances to which the infant is exposed daily.

A topic that is part of a broader reflection on the infant's environment

The issue of indoor air quality cannot be separated from a global reflection on the environment in which a child grows up.
