What official recommendations say

In 2019, the World Health Organization published guidelines on physical activity, sedentary behavior, and sleep for children under 5 years old. These recommendations are explicit: no screen exposure is recommended before 1 year of age, and very limited exposure, accompanied by an adult, is tolerated between 1 and 3 years of age. The WHO insists that screen time replaces time potentially dedicated to free play, social interaction, and physical activity, three documented pillars of early development.

In France, the French Society of Pediatrics (SFP) and the High Council of Public Health share a convergent position. The '3-6-9-12' rule popularized by psychiatrist Serge Tisseron, although not from an official institution, is part of this same preventive logic and is frequently cited in French pediatric recommendations.

What scientific studies have measured

Language Development

Several studies published in peer-reviewed journals, some of which were relayed by the journal JAMA Pediatrics, have examined the link between screen exposure and language development. The results consistently suggest that prolonged and unaccompanied exposure is associated with lower vocabulary scores at 18 and 24 months. However, researchers point out that direct causality remains difficult to isolate: other family and socioeconomic variables play a simultaneous role. These are therefore statistical associations, not definitive proofs of causality.

Sleep Quality

Studies conducted on cohorts of children aged 0 to 3 years show an association between evening screen use and a reduction in sleep duration and quality. The blue light emitted by tablets and smartphones could disrupt melatonin secretion, even in infants. These results are considered robust enough to justify current recommendations, even if long-term data for this age group remains incomplete.

Attention and Executive Functions

A more recent area of research focuses on executive functions, i.e., the ability to sustain attention, inhibit an impulsive response, and plan an action. Work published in Early Childhood Research Quarterly indicates that early and frequent exposure to fast-paced and stimulating content could be associated with attention difficulties at preschool age. However, researchers insist on the need to distinguish between the type of content, the context of use, and the presence or absence of a mediating adult.

What remains debated in the scientific community

It would be inaccurate to present all researchers as unanimous. Some scientists dispute the scope of available studies, highlighting their methodological limitations: variable sample sizes, difficulties in accurately measuring screen time, parental reporting bias. Others point out that not all uses are equivalent: a video call with a grandparent, a quality cartoon watched with a parent commenting on the images, and prolonged solitary use of a game application do not produce the same effects on development.

The current consensus therefore leans towards reasoned precaution rather than a total ban after 1 year. The quality of parental mediation and the type of content seem to be variables as important as the raw duration of exposure.

The role of the physical environment and free play

What developmental neuroscience increasingly confirms with growing solidity is the importance of sensory, motor, and social experiences in the early years. The infant's brain is built through repeated interactions with its physical and human environment. Free play, contact with varied textures, exploration of space, and the relationship with a close adult are stimulations whose beneficial effects on neuronal plasticity are well documented.

It is from this perspective that objects designed to encourage sensory and motor awakening make sense. Without falling into a list of prescriptive advice, current data allows for some useful benchmarks for parents. Before 18 months, experts agree to recommend avoiding screens with the exception of video conference calls. Between 18 months and 3 years, if content is viewed, the active presence of a parent to comment, name, and contextualize what is seen seems to mitigate potentially negative effects. In all cases, screen time should not encroach on sleep, meal times, or direct interaction moments.

These benchmarks are not guilt-inducing injunctions. They are decision-making tools based on the best available data to date. Real parenting is complex, and no study takes into account all the constraints of contemporary families.
