Why the material of a play mat is not a detail

EVA: a common foam, but one to examine closely
EVA—ethylene-vinyl acetate—is the most common foam used in children's floor mats, especially interlocking puzzle mats. It is lightweight, flexible, inexpensive to produce, and offers good cushioning. These are real qualities.
But EVA has a known weakness: depending on the manufacturing process and additives used, it can release formamide, a substance classified as a category 2 reprotoxic by the European Union. Formamide is added to soften the foam, and it can migrate to the mat's surface, especially in the first few weeks of use, when the material is still new.
In 2011, several European countries raised concerns about the presence of formamide in EVA mats intended for children. The European Commission has since regulated the migration of this substance, but the authorized levels vary by country and certifications obtained. What certification changes for an EVA mat
An EVA mat certified OEKO-TEX Standard 100 or REACH-compliant with formamide tests offers a much higher level of safety than a product without a label. OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification notably imposes strict limits on harmful substances, including formamide, phthalates, and heavy metals. XPE: a structurally different alternative
XPE—cross-linked polyethylene—is a closed-cell foam, obtained by a physical or chemical cross-linking process. This structure gives it several important properties for use with a baby.
Firstly, XPE does not require the addition of formamide in its manufacturing. The flexibility of the material is obtained by the molecular structure itself, not by plasticizers. This is a fundamental difference in terms of chemical safety.
Secondly, the closed-cell structure makes XPE waterproof and moisture-resistant. It does not retain water, which limits bacterial proliferation and facilitates cleaning. For a mat on which baby drools, eats, or spills, this is a practical and concrete advantage.
Thirdly, XPE is denser and more resistant to compression than standard EVA. It retains its shape better over time, even after months of intensive use. A low-end EVA mat can flatten and lose its cushioning properties in a few months; a good XPE mat retains its thickness much longer.
XPE and comfort: what the numbers say
Thickness plays a direct role in protecting baby's joints and head during the inevitable falls from a sitting position. Below 1.5 cm, the mat offers little real cushioning. Quality XPE mats generally offer a thickness of 1.5 to 2 cm, which represents a good balance between firmness and protection. A floor that is too soft is also not ideal: baby needs a stable surface to develop their muscle tone and support.
Practical comparison: EVA vs XPE

Regarding price: EVA is generally cheaper to produce, which explains its massive presence on the market. XPE is more expensive, but represents a better long-term investment.

The product must clearly state EVA or XPE (or cross-linked PE). If the composition is not mentioned, it's a warning sign. A serious manufacturer always indicates the material used.
Check for certifications present
OEKO-TEX Standard 100, REACH, EN71 (European standard for toys) are relevant certifications. Their presence does not guarantee perfection, but attests that the product has been tested by an independent body.
