What is EVA foam?

Belgium even temporarily banned the sale of these mats in 2011 for this reason.
There are EVA mats that comply with current regulations, particularly those that adhere to REACH regulations and whose formamide content is below regulatory thresholds. But REACH compliance does not guarantee a total absence of formamide—it guarantees that the measured level is below a threshold deemed acceptable by European regulations.
What is XPE foam?
XPE, or cross-linked polyethylene foam, is a foam produced by a different process. Its cross-linking is done physically, by radiation or by agents that do not generate volatile chemical byproducts like formamide. XPE is chemically inert: it does not contain ADCA, no residual formamide, no phthalates.
XPE also offers other functional advantages. Its closed-cell structure makes it waterproof: it does not absorb water, and liquids are easily wiped off the surface. It is resistant to compression, meaning it does not flatten as quickly as EVA under a child's repeated weight. And it maintains its thermal insulation properties over time.

How to choose: the criteria that really matter

Relevant certifications
Two certifications are particularly significant for a play mat:
REACH: this European regulation governs the use of dangerous chemical substances in consumer products. A REACH-compliant mat has been tested for substances of concern. This is a minimum requirement.
OEKO-TEX Standard 100: this certification mainly applies to textiles, but some manufacturers submit their foams to equivalent tests. It certifies the absence of harmful substances beyond regulatory thresholds, based on independent laboratory tests.
