Why a baby's emotions are never 'whining'

A baby crying for no apparent reason, a toddler collapsing to the floor over a spilled block, a 2-year-old unable to share their favorite toy: these everyday scenes are often misinterpreted. They are not about manipulation or bad parenting. They reflect the actual state of the developing brain.

Naming emotions: a fundamental pedagogical act

In other words, a child with a rich emotional vocabulary experiences and regulates their emotions differently than a child who only has access to 'happy' or 'not happy.'

This gives everyday parenting significant scope. Saying 'I see you're frustrated because the tower fell, that's disappointing' is not armchair psychology: it's an act of brain construction.
