Organizing life with twins: everyday life during the first months

S'organiser avec des jumeaux : deux couvertures et deux bols identiques posés dans un jardin — Treelys®

Organizing life with twins is not about doing twice what you would do for one child. It is a different problem: two simultaneous needs, only one adult available most of the time, and fatigue that sets in more quickly. The first few months are managed with three levers: synchronizing schedules, simplifying equipment, and organizing outside help.

Here is what these three levers mean in practical terms, week by week.

Where should you start when you come home with twins?

Through synchronization. Wake the second baby when the first wakes, starting in the first few weeks. This is the step that changes daily life the most, because it prevents one parent from becoming a perpetual nurse with two out-of-sync schedules.

This practice is accepted by most maternity care teams for full-term twins with no weight concerns. In cases of prematurity or special monitoring, discuss it with the pediatrician: some children need strictly on-demand feeds for several weeks.

What synchronization makes possible

It groups feeds, diaper changes, and naps together. It creates genuinely free periods instead of scattered twenty-minute breaks. It makes the night manageable because a single waking serves both children.

It has one limitation: twins are not interchangeable. One child may need more time, more contact, or more frequent feeds. Synchronization provides a framework, not a rigid rule.

Nights: what really works

Sleep arrangements always come first. Two separate cribs in the same room remain the most common and easiest setup to make safe.

Official safe-sleep recommendations apply equally to each child: on their back, on a firm mattress, without a bumper or blanket. We explain them in detail in our article on safe sleep for infants.

Sharing night wakings between parents

Three arrangements come up often among parents of twins. The first divides the night into two blocks, with each parent taking one. The second assigns one child to each parent for the night. The third alternates full nights, with each parent truly sleeping every other night.

None is inherently better. The only useful rule is to make an explicit choice, then reassess after two weeks. Daily improvisation is more exhausting than a deliberate routine. The broader topic of parental recovery is covered in our article on parental sleep.

Meals: breastfeeding, bottle-feeding or both

Breastfeeding two children is possible and commonly practiced. It requires a stable setup, a suitable nursing pillow and, during the first few weeks, competent support. The rugby-ball hold, with one child under each arm, allows simultaneous feeding.

Mixed feeding and exclusive bottle-feeding are legitimate and common choices among parents of twins. The decisive factor is sustaining it over time, not conforming to a particular model.

Storage that saves time

Two identical stations, one on the ground floor and the other upstairs, avoid repeated trips. Each station contains diapers, spare clothes, liniment and a changing mat. This limited duplication is one of the few cases where doubling equipment is justified.

Equipment: what to double and what not to

This is where parents of twins spend the most unnecessarily. The rule is simple: double what is used at the same time, and share the rest.

What to double

  • Cots and mattresses.
  • Car seats, which must be approved and suitable for each child.
  • Sleep sacks and bed linen.
  • Bottles, if feeding is by bottle.

What not to double

  • The bathtub: bathe them one after the other, never simultaneously.
  • The main changing station.
  • The high chair before starting solid foods.
  • The floor mat, provided it is large enough for two.

This final point deserves a word. Two babies on the floor need space, not two separate areas. A wide, continuous surface allows them to see each other, observe each other, and later interact. Our reversible foldable baby play mat was designed around this idea of a single, modular surface, with two usable sides.

For choosing the size and thickness according to age, our guide to baby foam mats provides the relevant measurements.

Bath time: a critical part of daily life

Two children, one adult, and water: this is the riskiest situation of the day. The rule is absolute. Never bathe two babies at the same time when you are alone.

The usual approach is to place the first child in a safe spot on the floor while bathing the second, then switch. A bathtub at a good height reduces back strain, which becomes significant when the process is repeated twice. Our baby bathtub comparison details the available formats according to the bathroom space.

What specific entitlements apply to multiple births?

They are more extensive than for a single birth and are often poorly understood.

  • Maternity leave: 34 weeks for twins, comprising 12 weeks before delivery and 22 weeks after. The start of prenatal leave may be brought forward by up to four weeks.
  • Paternity and childcare leave: 32 calendar days in the event of multiple births, including an initial mandatory period of 4 days following the 3 days of birth leave.
  • Family benefits: the birth grant and basic allowance are paid per child, subject to means testing.

These benefits should be applied for early. Administrative procedures are among the first casualties of fatigue during the first few months, and a late application delays payment.

Organizing life with twins: mobilizing outside help

This is the most effective and most difficult lever to activate. Parents of twins receive many vague offers of help and very little actual help.

The approach that works is to turn offers into specific, dated tasks. One load of laundry on Tuesday. Grocery shopping on Saturday. Two hours of childcare on Thursday afternoon. A named form of help is help that shows up.

Family allowance funds also offer in-home assistance in the event of multiple births, subject to certain conditions. The application is made to the fund responsible for the household.

Each child’s place

Two children of the same age do not form a single unit. They have distinct rhythms, temperaments, and needs, and this distinction is better established when it is named early.

A few simple practices can help: address each child by name rather than saying “the twins,” plan short one-on-one moments, and avoid always dressing them identically. The question of each child’s place in the sibling group is explored in our article on preparing the older child for the arrival of a second child.

Frequently asked questions from parents of twins

Do you really need to wake the second baby?

It is the most useful practice during the first few months, unless medically contraindicated. It naturally becomes more flexible around four to six months, when routines stabilize.

Can twins sleep in the same crib?

It is not recommended beyond the very first weeks, and never once either child can roll over. Two cribs in the same room remain the standard recommendation.

How can you manage outings alone with two babies?

By preparing everything the night before and reducing your goals. A successful short outing is better than an abandoned long one. Carrying one child while using a single stroller is a practical option in the city.

Is it normal to feel overwhelmed?

Yes, and it is common. The workload during the first months with twins is objectively heavier. If exhaustion persists, speaking to your primary-care doctor or maternal and child health services is the right course of action.

Key takeaways

The first months with twins depend more on organization than on equipment. Synchronizing routines, duplicating only what is used at the same time, making bath time safe, arranging help from a named person, and claiming specific rights: these five decisions determine most of daily life.
