The National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (INSEE) publishes France's demographic balance sheet each year. The 2025 figures confirm a trend that has been observed for several years.
643,905 births in 2025
According to INSEE, 643,905 babies were born in France in 2025, a decrease of 2.3% compared to 2024. This decline is part of a downward trajectory observed for fifteen years.
Compared to 2010, the number of births decreased by 24%, a level that INSEE places at its lowest since 1942. However, the decrease recorded in 2025 remains more moderate than that of 2023, which had reached 6.6%.
A slowdown in the decline in 2026
The first available data for 2026 show a 1.3% decrease over the first five months of the year, compared to the same period in 2025. The rate of decrease therefore seems to be stabilizing.
One of the highest fertility rates in Europe
In 2024, the total fertility rate stood at 1.61 children per woman in France. This level remains the second highest in the European Union, behind Bulgaria, at 1.72 children per woman.
