The French National Authority for Health (HAS) publishes precise recommendations to reduce the risk of sudden unexpected infant death (SUID). These guidelines concern sleeping position, bedding, and the bedroom environment.
Always place the baby on their back
The HAS recommends always placing infants on their backs for every sleep period, day and night. This position remains the standard, including when the child begins rolling over independently.
A firm, clear sleeping space
The infant should sleep on a firm mattress in a crib with bars that is suitable for their size. Our guide details the criteria for choosing a firm, properly fitted baby mattress. The HAS recommends a season-appropriate sleep sack, without a pillow, duvet, or blanket.
Items to remove from the crib
Baby positioners, head positioners, and positioning cushions are considered unnecessary and dangerous by the HAS. Crib bumpers and large stuffed toys should also be kept out of the sleeping area.
Temperature and room-sharing
The HAS recommends a moderate room temperature of between 18 and 20 degrees in the child's bedroom. It also advises that infants sleep in their parents' room for the first six months, without sharing their bed.
Breastfeeding: a recognized protective factor
The HAS identifies breastfeeding as a protective factor against sudden unexpected infant death and recommends encouraging it. Exposure to tobacco, before and after birth, should be avoided.
Further information
These recommendations are part of a broader statistical context that we explain in our article on infant mortality in France. They also complement the developmental milestones presented in our article on infant cognitive development. You can also find our play mats for awake playtime outside the sleeping area.
