The bath aisle overflows with accessories. The thermometer is one of them. Is it worth it, and which one should you choose? Here is an answer based on real use.
The right temperature, and why it matters
The widely accepted reference for an infant's bath is around 37 °C. A range of 36 to 37 °C is generally cited.
This precision is not fussiness. An infant's skin is thin and their body surface is proportionally large. They cool down and burn faster than an adult.
The real risk: scalding
Domestic burns in young children are often linked to hot tap water. Water at 60 °C burns in a few seconds.
The most effective measure is in fact not the thermometer. It is adjusting the water heater or fitting a thermostatic mixing valve.
Is the elbow enough?
The elbow or wrist method gives an order of magnitude. It tells you whether the water is too hot or too cold.
It does not distinguish 37 °C from 39 °C. That gap is barely perceptible by hand and already uncomfortable for a newborn.
What a thermometer really adds
It mainly helps in two situations. First, the early weeks, when you lack reference points. Second, when several adults give the bath and do not share the same sensitivity.
After a few months, many parents do without one. It is a calibration accessory, not permanent equipment.
Types of thermometer
The classic floating thermometer
Simple, battery-free, often the most durable. Check that it has no detachable parts that could be swallowed.
The digital thermometer
Faster and clearer to read. It depends on a battery, whose housing must be screwed shut and watertight. A battery compartment that pops open is a deal-breaker.
The thermometer built into the bathtub

What to avoid
- Toy thermometers with multiple recesses, hard to dry.
- Models that change colour without displaying a figure.
- Connected accessories, which add an app for a trivial piece of information.
An object that stays damp develops mould inside. That is the main flaw of hollow bath toys.
What matters more than the thermometer
