The French National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (INSEE) publishes France’s demographic report every year. The 2025 figures confirm a trend that began several years ago.
643,905 births in 2025
According to INSEE, 643,905 babies were born in France in 2025, a decrease of 2.3% compared with 2024. This decline is part of a downward trend observed over the past fifteen years.
Compared with 2010, the number of births has fallen by 24%, reaching what INSEE identifies as its lowest level since 1942. However, the decline recorded in 2025 was more moderate than in 2023, when it reached 6.6%.
A slowdown in the decline in 2026
The first data available for 2026 show a 1.3% decrease over the first five months of the year compared with the same period in 2025. The rate of decline therefore appears to be stabilizing.
One of the highest fertility rates in Europe
In 2024, the total fertility rate stood at 1.61 children per woman in France. This remains the second-highest level in the European Union, behind Bulgaria, at 1.72 children per woman.
