Infant Physical Activity: WHO Recommendations

Espace de motricité libre au sol pour bébé, ambiance scandinave épurée - Treelys®

The World Health Organization (WHO) published guidelines in 2019 on physical activity, sedentary behavior, and sleep for children under 5. These recommendations, which are still in effect, also apply to infants under one year old.

What the WHO recommends for children under one

For infants, the WHO recommends being active several times a day in various ways, particularly through floor-based play while interacting with an adult. It recommends at least 30 minutes spent in a prone position throughout the day, as soon as the child is awake.

This recommendation aims to promote motor development, particularly by strengthening the neck, shoulders, and trunk, before the child learns to sit and then walk.

Limit time spent in a restricted position

The WHO recommends not keeping an infant restrained for more than one hour at a time, whether in a stroller, car seat, or bouncer. After that, it advises prioritizing free play on the floor, for example on a play mat designed to support motor development.

Screens: no recommended exposure before one year

For children under one year old, the WHO does not recommend any screen time. This position is consistent with the public health guidance issued in France on early exposure to screens.

Sleep, a key part of the same recommendations

The WHO addresses physical activity and sleep within the same framework. It recommends 14 to 17 hours of quality sleep per day during the first three months, then 12 to 16 hours between 4 and 11 months, including naps.

What these guidelines mean in everyday life

These recommendations do not require any particular equipment. Above all, they encourage setting aside time every day for free play on the floor, without restrictions or overstimulation.
