Studies have shown that it can be released through evaporation from some EVA mats, particularly during the first few weeks of use and especially in poorly ventilated spaces.

What is XPE foam?

XPE, or Cross-linked Polyethylene, is a more recent-generation foam. Its molecular structure is fundamentally different from that of EVA: the polymer chains are bonded together through a cross-linking process, which significantly changes the material’s physical and chemical properties.

Manufactured without formamide

This is the main argument in favor of XPE: its manufacturing process does not require formamide. Its standard composition contains no volatile chemical blowing agent. For a mat on which an infant will spend many hours, often with their face very close to the surface, this is a meaningful difference.

Superior physical properties

The cross-linking process also gives XPE better mechanical resistance. In practical terms, this means it compresses less over time under the repeated weight of a child crawling or jumping. A quality XPE mat retains its thickness and cushioning for much longer than an EVA equivalent subjected to the same use. Weight and ease of handling: Both materials are lightweight, but XPE is generally slightly denser at the same thickness, giving it better cushioning.

Price: XPE is more expensive to produce, which is reflected in its retail price. It requires a higher initial investment, but is often more rational over time when the product’s longevity is taken into account.

Certifications: For both materials, insist on independent, verifiable certifications. OEKO-TEX Standard 100 and REACH compliance are reliable benchmarks. An OEKO-TEX-certified product has been tested for the absence of harmful substances, including formamide above permitted thresholds.

Is the product designed to grow with the child over several years?

These simple questions make it possible to effectively filter out products that make marketing claims without supporting them with verifiable data.
