The first question: is it reasonable?
Whether you’re visiting grandparents two hours away by car or taking your first family weekend away, the question of travelling with a young child comes up early. The short answer: yes, as long as you prepare the right familiar cues. For the drive itself, see our article on a long car journey with a baby.
Before 6 months: simplify rather than overpack
During the first few months, your baby mainly needs consistency, with the same sleep schedule and feeding routine. Equipment should above all be reliable and portable, not plentiful.
Sleep: the first thing to watch
A change of environment can temporarily disrupt falling asleep. Recreating the same familiar cues, such as the sleeping bag or bedtime routine, helps minimise this effect in an unfamiliar room.
From 6–9 months: think mobility and exploration
Once your child is actively exploring on the floor, the question changes. How can you recreate, at the grandparents’ house, a play area that is as safe as the one at home?
A floor space, wherever you are
A foldable play mat, carried in its bag, lets you recreate a comfortable exploration area in just a few seconds. It’s one of the few pieces of equipment designed to follow your child, as discussed in our complete guide to choosing a play mat.
What we often forget
- Allow extra time at every stage of the journey.
- Bring a familiar scent cue rather than a new accessory.
- Accept that a first trip may be imperfect, like any learning experience.
At their own pace, children adapt more quickly than we imagine. To prepare for your return home as well, see our list of newborn essentials or our article on setting up a Montessori nursery.
