In recent years, pediatricians, neuroscience researchers, and public health organizations have agreed that early exposure to screens deserves serious attention. This is not a question of parental morality, but of neurological development. Developmental neuroscience emphasizes that young children’s brains learn primarily through physical exploration, social interaction, and unstructured play. Providing a child with a stimulating, safe, age-appropriate environment fulfills a function that a screen cannot: immediate sensory feedback, discovering cause and effect through direct action on objects, and developing fine and gross motor skills.
A well-designed baby play mat, for example, provides precisely this type of environment: varied textures, visual stimulation suited to an infant’s vision, and space for unrestricted movement. It is not a substitute for parental presence, but a support that encourages independent exploration within a secure setting.
Maintain screen-free routines
Pediatricians recommend keeping certain times screen-free: meals, bedtime, and the first few hours after waking. These moments are valuable opportunities for language interaction and emotional regulation.
Do not feel guilty, but stay informed
The purpose of these recommendations is not to create parental guilt, but to help families make choices consistent with what science understands about young children’s development. An exhausted parent who occasionally uses a screen to take a break is not a bad parent. Consistency and context matter more than an isolated incident.
