Second-hand baby gear: what to buy, what to skip

Étagère en bois clair avec vêtements pliés, jouets en bois et panier tressé, univers Treelys®

Buying second-hand fits an approach that resists overconsumption. You still need to know what can be passed on safely and what should stay new.

What to buy without hesitation

Clothes

The first sizes are worn for a few weeks. They often reach the second-hand market in excellent condition.

Wash before use, at a moderate temperature. Check the seams and the absence of small parts that could come loose.

Sturdy furniture

Chest of drawers, changing table, low shelving: this furniture ages well. Check stability and wall fixings.

Solid wood toys

They can be cleaned, sanded and last for decades. Rule out any whose varnish is flaking or whose parts are cracked.

Our article on free play explains why a few simple objects are more than enough.

Books and household textiles

No particular risk, provided you wash and inspect. These are the categories where second-hand is most obvious.

What calls for real vigilance

Car seats

A seat that has been through a crash loses its absorption capacity, even with no visible damage. Without a certain history, do not buy it.

Also check the manufacturing date. Foams and plastics degrade over time.

Mattresses

A sagging mattress increases sleep-related risks. Our guidance on this subject is in our article on safe sleep according to the HAS.

A new, firm mattress in the right size remains the rule. It is one of the few categories where saving money makes no sense.

Products relying on a harness or straps

High chairs, bouncers and baby carriers depend on their straps. Slack fabric or a worn buckle compromises the whole safety system.

Test every buckle before buying. Our article on choosing a high chair details the checkpoints.

Products in prolonged contact with skin

Play mats, potties and bathtubs raise a question of hygiene more than of mechanical safety. The rule is simple: favour smooth, non-porous surfaces.

Closed-cell foam, such as XPE, can be disinfected on the surface. Open-cell foam absorbs and retains. That is one of the points developed in our comparison of EVA versus XPE.

Our reversible play mats are designed to last through several children. We would rather see a product passed to three families than replaced every year.

Five checks before buying

  • Ask for photos of the label, not only of the product.
  • Check for CE marking and the model reference.
  • Search for the model in product recall databases.
  • Handle straps, hinges and folding mechanisms.
  • Refuse any product with no manual or legible identification.

These habits match those in our guide to recognising a quality product.

Buy less, pass on more

Second-hand is only worthwhile if the original product was well designed. A fragile object stays fragile second-hand.

The real lever remains the initial choice. Our article on evolving products and our about page explain this approach.
