The French National Authority for Health (HAS) publishes precise recommendations to reduce the risk of sudden unexpected infant death (SUID). These guidelines concern sleeping position, bedding, and the bedroom environment.
Always on their back
HAS recommends systematically placing infants on their backs for all sleep times, both day and night. This position remains the standard, even when the child begins to roll over independently.
A firm and clear sleeping area
Infants should sleep on a firm mattress in a crib appropriate for their size. HAS recommends a sleep sack appropriate for the season, without a pillow, duvet, or blanket.
Items to remove from the bed
HAS describes infant positioners, head positioners, and positioning pillows as useless and dangerous. Crib bumpers and bulky stuffed animals should also be kept out of the sleeping area.
Temperature and room sharing
HAS recommends a moderate ambient temperature, between 18 and 20 degrees Celsius, in the child's bedroom. It also advises that infants sleep in their parents' room for the first six months, without sharing their bed.
Breastfeeding, a recognized protective factor
HAS identifies breastfeeding as a protective factor against sudden unexpected infant death and recommends encouraging it. Exposure to tobacco, both before and after birth, should be avoided.
