Why motor skills are at the heart of a child's overall development

When a baby grasps an object for the first time, this seemingly insignificant gesture mobilizes millions of neural connections. Motor skills—whether fine or gross—are not simply a matter of muscles. A child who does not yet have good trunk stability will have more difficulty concentrating on manipulating objects.

Major milestones month by month (0-3 years)

From 0 to 3 months: the body discovers its own existence

At birth, movements are essentially reflexive. The newborn grasps what is placed in their palm without being aware of it. Gradually, they begin to follow a moving object with their eyes, to bring their hands to their mouth. The mouth at this age is the main sensory and motor organ: sucking, biting, exploring with the mouth are normal and necessary behaviors.

From this stage, time spent on the tummy—under supervision—is fundamental. Tummy time strengthens the neck, shoulder, and back muscles, laying the foundation for all future motor skills.

From 3 to 6 months: grasping becomes intentional

The child begins to reach for an object with intention. They do not yet grasp with precision, but use their entire palm. They discover cause and effect: shaking an object produces a sound. These experiences are genuine cognitive learnings disguised as play.

From 12 to 24 months: walking and self-affirmation

Independent walking establishes itself, often between 10 and 15 months, with large normal variations. This conquest of verticality coincides with a period of intense self-affirmation. The child climbs, descends, pushes, pulls, throws. These behaviors are not whims: they respond to a deep developmental need to experiment with space and their own abilities.

Fine motor skills progress rapidly: stacking cubes, turning pages, inserting shapes, scribbling with crayons. These activities directly prepare for future school learning, especially writing.

From 24 to 36 months: precision and coordination

The child runs, jumps, climbs with increasing coordination. They begin to draw recognizable shapes, cut out, string beads. Lateralization (preference for one hand) becomes more precise, although clear hand dominance is often not established until around 4-5 years old.

Common mistakes to avoid

Sitting a child before they can sit up on their own

Placing a baby in a position they cannot yet reach alone—with cushions or a seat reducer—may seem well-intentioned, but it actually deprives their body of the muscular work necessary to acquire that posture solidly. The golden rule: never put a baby in a position they cannot get into on their own.

Too much time in bouncers, swings, and other containment devices

These devices have their uses, but they limit the body's degrees of freedom. A baby lying on their back on a mat has an infinite number of movement possibilities. A baby in a bouncer is confined to a passive posture. The balance between safety and freedom of movement is essential.

Wanting to rush through stages

Early walking is not a sign of superior intelligence. Each stage has its purpose. A child who crawls for a long time before walking consolidates neurological connections that a child who skips stages will not have time to establish. Patience here is a pedagogical act.

How to enrich the environment without overdoing it

Sensory and motor enrichment does not require sophisticated toys. Everyday objects—wooden spoons, boxes to open and close, fabrics with varied textures, fabric balls—offer a richness of experience far superior to most noisy and light-up plastic toys.

The parent's role: observe before intervening

The parent is not a sports coach. Their role is primarily that of an attentive observer. Knowing how to recognize when the child is making fruitful effort—slightly challenged, but not discouraged—and when they need discreet support is a skill that develops with time and observation.
