What Are the First 1,000 Days?

The expression “first 1,000 days” refers to the period from the beginning of pregnancy through the child’s second year. This concept, popularized by developmental neuroscience, highlights a window during which the brain develops at a speed it will never reach again afterward.

Free play, without instructions or an imposed goal, stimulates creativity, problem-solving, and motor skills. It is one of the main ways young children learn, even before they begin formal education.

Why This Window Does Not Close Abruptly

The brain retains an ability to adapt, known as brain plasticity, throughout life. The first 1,000 days therefore do not irreversibly determine a child’s future, but they lay foundations on which later learning can build.
