Breastfeeding: Benefits, Challenges, and WHO Recommendations

Allaitement Maternel : Bénéfices, Difficultés et Ressources Fiables - Treelys®

Official recommendations on breastfeeding

The World Health Organization recommends exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months of life, followed by continued breastfeeding for up to 2 years or more, in addition to diversified complementary feeding. This recommendation remains a reference, not an obligation to which every family must conform.

A recommendation, not an injunction

These WHO guidelines are addressed to all global populations, in very diverse health contexts. In France, each parent remains free to choose the feeding method adapted to their situation, their constraints, and their personal experience.

Documented benefits of breastfeeding

Several benefits of breastfeeding are established in the scientific literature, without disqualifying other infant feeding methods.

For the baby

Breast milk naturally adapts to the nutritional needs of the infant over the weeks. It provides maternal antibodies that temporarily strengthen the baby's immune defenses during the first months of life.

A protective effect against certain infections

Epidemiological studies report a reduction in the risk of certain digestive and respiratory infections in breastfed infants, particularly during the first months. This effect gradually decreases after the introduction of diversified complementary feeding.

For the mother

Breastfeeding promotes faster uterine recovery after childbirth thanks to the release of oxytocin. Some studies also associate breastfeeding with a reduced risk of certain female cancers in the long term.

Frequent and legitimate difficulties

Breastfeeding does not always go smoothly, despite an often idealized image in public discourse.

Pain and cracked nipples

Poor latching by the baby can cause pain and cracked nipples in the mother. Early support from a midwife or lactation consultant often helps correct the position and relieve this pain.

Doubts about milk supply

Many mothers worry about not producing enough milk for their baby. Regular monitoring of the child's weight curve by a healthcare professional remains the most reliable way to assess whether breastfeeding covers the infant's actual needs.

Fatigue and the burden of exclusive breastfeeding

Exclusive breastfeeding, especially at night, represents a real physical and mental burden for the mother. This reality deserves to be recognized, without questioning the legitimacy of the choice to breastfeed.

Breastfeeding and stopping: a personal choice

Continuing, reducing, or stopping breastfeeding at any time remains a legitimate decision, specific to each family. Infant formula, when necessary or chosen, meets the nutritional needs of the infant in an appropriate and safe manner.

Surround yourself with support to experience this period well

Breastfeeding difficulties often coincide with those of parental mental load in the first weeks. The lack of sleep due to night feedings also weakens the mother's physical recovery, regardless of the chosen feeding method.

Recognizing the signs of baby blues and postpartum depression remains useful, as the fatigue associated with breastfeeding can sometimes be confused with these states. For any questions about daily support, our team can be reached via the contact page.
