Around 4, 5, or 6 months, the question comes up for almost all parents. Where to start? Should vegetables be introduced before fruits? A lot of advice circulates, often contradictory. Here's what French health authorities actually say.
What ANSES and Santé Publique France recommend
Food diversification should not begin before 4 months of age, nor after 6 months of age. This rule applies whether or not the child is at risk of allergies. Before 4 months, their digestive system is not yet ready.
Milk remains the main food source
Breast milk or formula continues to cover most of your baby's nutritional needs, about 500 ml per day until 1 year of age. Diversification complements feedings; it does not replace them.
No mandatory order
There is no imposed sequence between vegetables, fruits, or proteins. The goal is to gradually expose your child to a wide variety of tastes and textures. A refused food can be offered up to ten times before being accepted.
Salt, sugar, and allergens
Authorities advise against adding salt to baby's meals. Added sugar is also considered unnecessary. For major allergens, recommendations lean towards early introduction, one food at a time.
What this practically changes for your daily life
There is no right or wrong way to diversify, as long as your child's rhythm is respected. This mealtime is one of the first settings where they explore their development during the first 1000 days.
This same logic of autonomy is found in playtime on the floor, on a stable playmat, at their height. It also prepares for the next stages, such as potty training a few months later.
