A high chair is one of the few pieces of equipment used every day for two to three years. It deserves a reasoned choice, not an impulse purchase.
Safety criteria first
Stability
A high chair must withstand a sideways push and a child pressing on the tray. A wide base and a low centre of gravity are the best indicators.
Be wary of models that are very narrow at the base. They fit better in a cramped kitchen, but tolerate sudden movements poorly.
The harness
A five-point harness is more restrictive than a three-point one. It is also clearly safer before the child sits steadily.
Check for a fixed crotch post. Without it, a child can slide under the tray, even when strapped in.
The applicable standard
In Europe, high chairs fall under standard EN 14988. It covers stability, restraint systems and entrapment risks.

Everyday use criteria
Cleaning
This is the point that weighs most in real life. A removable tray, with no deep grooves, cleans in seconds.
Padded fabric seats are comfortable but show every mark. Check that the cover comes off and is machine washable.
Adjustments
A height-adjustable chair lets you bring the child to the family table. That is a real lever for including them in meals.
The adjustable footrest is often overlooked. Feet dangling in mid-air worsen posture and concentration during the meal.
Footprint
Measure before buying. A folding chair makes sense in a small home or for meals at the grandparents'.

What counts as an option, not a need
- Stacked, double removable trays.
- Multiple backrest recline positions, of little use once weaning has started.
- Built-in toys, which draw attention away from the meal.
- Castors, unless you genuinely need to move the chair often.

Convertibility: a claim to check
Many models describe themselves as evolving. Check concretely what that covers.
A genuinely convertible chair turns into a child's seat after three years, with no extra part to buy. Otherwise, convertibility is a sales promise.

Materials and durability
Solid wood ages better than thin plastic, but stays heavier. Good-thickness plastic is acceptable and easier to clean.
